In terms of subject matter, the publisher Hermann Schmidt Mainz, which grew out of university press H. Schmidt (founded in 1945), has always been closely linked with the personal interests of its owner. At the end of the 1980s, Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs, who joined his father's printing works on 1 January 1986 and took over in 1988, started publishing beautifully designed and lovingly produced books on typography, graphic design and art, winning numerous national and international awards along the way.
In 1992 his wife Karin Schmidt-Friderichs joined the company to look after Sales and Marketing. Within the space of a few years she had succeeded in positioning the publisher as the leading specialist publisher of books on typography, graphic design and creative advertising in the German-speaking world. A key role is played in this by standard works such as Lesetypographie, Detailtypografie and Kribbeln im Kopf (the German title of Creative Advertising). These “core titles” are intended as timeless classics and are regularly revised and reissued. They are supplemented by “shorter-lived” titles that focus on specific tendencies and current trends in the world of graphic design and advertising.
On 1 January 1999, Verlag Hermann Schmidt Mainz became an independent publishing company under the management of Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs and his wife Karin. In addition to his commercial role as Managing Partner, Bertram devotes his time to the generation and production of between 25 and 30 highly ambitious titles each year while Karin remains responsible for Sales and Marketing.
